Hi all,

Just building a new pc. Am totally out of touch with video cards. Im not a gamer really - but I want the card to be able to play videos back as well as possible - and I really want the card to be SILENT. Ive already specced out a silent power supply and proc fan at some silly cost, so the last thing I want is some vid car wurring away!

All suggestions and links appreciated!

Andy

there is a limitless budget.........Ok not limitless but want a good performance, so performance more important than cost. I guess i had a figure of something like 100 ish??? But as I say, not a gamer so no point throwing 128mb at it if I dont need it to watch DVDs? er do I.

As a recent convert to ATI I would go for one of their cards rather than nvidia. The sharpness of the desktop & text and video/dvd playback is noticably superior.

Another die hard Nvidia fan here converted to ATI. As mentioned, the clarity on most of the Radeon 9xxx range is noticeably better than the Geforce 4 series.

DVI is predominantly uses for newer/higher end flat screens. I don't think any CRT's can use them by design atm. Could be talking cod tho.

Cheers,

Nick

If your card has a DVI output you get a 100% digital signal right from the card to a flat panel monitor (assuming that it has a DVI input, of course), otherwise you get a "digital==>analogue ==>digital" conversion going on, with a noticeable drop in image quality.

You certainly get much better results from a DVI card / DVI panel set-up.

AWD

P.S. Beware, not all TFT panels have DVI inputs, some are "analogue" only!

Someone at work is selling an unused ATI Radeon 9000. What would be a good price?

Payment must received within 10 days after auction ended, or we have the right to cancel the order. Item is shipping from Singapore by express airmail. Goods delivered may subject to import duty or VAT imposed by UK Customs & Excise Dept. You are responsible for these charges.

Er no thanks I can get it from Watford for £50 too, without dodgy charges.

Import tax is 21%, VAT is not applicable to imports and never will be, minimum import tax is 21%, max is 29%.

*so speaks the pilot who is thoroughly briefed on such!*
