I've just bought that exact drive myself last week! Installed as slave for my DV edditing. Pleased with it so far. The only trouble I had was that my BIOS did not recognise the correct size. I had to use the WD EZ-BIOS software.

See my troubles and joys here

yep you will notice a increase in performance. i have 2x80gig drives in my machine with 8meg caches on them. machine cuts down on disc accesses and pulls the stuff from the cache. alot quicker than the old 5400rpm 2meg cache ones. it also help is you have an ata133 cable attached.

cheers

Looking at the reviews, the performance tests don't seem to suggest a huge gain over the 2mb equivalents.

I've just bought the exact same WD120GB drive you mentioned from overclockers. You'll have no problems with the noise of the drive - its near whisper quiet.

As for performance, its replaced my twin U160 scsi setup - and I have to say I'm very happy with it.

Hi there,

I need a new hard drive. Am looking at 80 or 120Gb 7200 spin.

Will I notice much of a performance increase buying a drive that has 8Mb cache over one with 2Mb cache?

Best Billy Bargain I've found so far is this 8Mb one from Dabs...

Caviar 120.0GB UDMA100
Mfr code: WD1200JB
Quicklinx: 18HFWS
£119.00 inc VAT
(8Mb cache)

Any suggestions on other suitable drives? I could do with a relatively quiet drive if possible.

Cheers
Joolz
