No they are different (but with much similar results);
Hubs, simply put, receives the network data in packets and 'repeats' this packet to all devices on its ports.
Switches control the flow of network traffic based on the address information in each packet. A switch learns which devices are connected to its ports, and then forwards on packets to the appropriate port only.
For smaller networks hubs are fine, but anywhere where network traffic is high, switches are the way to go.
