I'm a bit concerned I put a little bit too much thermal goop on top of an AMD cpu which, in retrospect, has caused some spillage off the main chip (located centre/top of the athlon) onto the tiny surrounding chips (also located on top of the athlon)

Can this cause any damage ?

Nope, but you have too much grease on. You need about as much as a grain of rice spread evenly across the core.

On the 'follow-up' order to OC'ers I added some AS3 and use this now instead of the goo they supply.

PS .. enjoying the Shuttle ??

Depends on which stuff you used. Some is electrically conductive so could short something out (thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity are related IIRC?).

Two ways to generally apply thermal goo;

a) Put small dollop on plastic bag which is stretched over your finger tip then apply it to chip making a small layer on cpu.

b) Cover your finger tip in scotch tape, apply artic silver etc to the tape and then apply it to chip - can do corners etc much better using the tape

Dont worry everyone ****s it up the 1st time

Steve - haven't been able to successfully run the shuttle yet - so I'm evaluating all the possible causes.

Upon startup it reports the correct CPU (AMD 2600+)
It reports the ram correctly (Corsair Platinum 2x512MB PC3200@333)
Then it takes an age to report the IDE devices...(30secs?)
It always correctly reports the IDE devices though.
Then it takes an age to start booting the CDROM (30secs?)
Then it hangs during "XP inspecting hardware" message

Cpu temp = 36
Sys temp = 36

Tried alternative cables
Tried alternative HDisk
Rebuilt it a couple of times, during which I noticed the thermal goop - hence the reason for the thread.

I presume you have browsed the shuttle forum at www.sudhian.com ?

I think I have read of a similar problem - turned out to be something to do with cable select on the CD drive ??

Check your jumpers on the IDE & CD Drives.

IDE settings should be roughly;

HD1 = Primary master
CD rom/writer = Primary slave

HD2 = Secondary master
DVD = Secondary slave

Check their jumpers etc and that may be causing your snags

My config is:

Primary Master: HD1
Secondary Master: DVD / CD-RW combo drive

Just about to try without any IDE devices.
Will have a play around with jumpers.
Never use Cable Select.

Cheers All,

I didnt put in on the cpu, i put just a really thin layer on the prom heat bit. Only needs to be really thin.

Doesnt matter where it goes over tbh.
