I've got a network cable running from upstairs to downstairs in my house. Unfortunately my son pulled it out of the back of the laptop and broke the clip that holds it in. Is it easy to fit a new plug? Don't really want to have to replace the cable if I can help it...

You need a special crimp tool to fit a new plug.

If you have no alternative, and can get the cable out without taking the house apart (remembering you have to get it back in with new plug attached) then you can send me the cable and I'll fit a new plug for you.

Thats the problem.. its going to be a pain to get the cable out. If I have to do that i'd be as well just buying a new cable. And hoping the little b*****r doesn't do it again!

Cheers for the offer anyway!

Guessed so.

No doubt there will be someone else on here closer to Manchester who might be persuaded to pop round and do it for you.

They usually work with the tab broken off. Has it stopped working then?

You can get a cheapo crimp tool for one-off jobs like this. They are only plastic, but they'll do the trick

It still works.. but any slight movement knocks it out and drops the net connection.. just a bit annoying...

Use some tape and stick the plug to the computer or get a short extension lead for cat5 and tape the 2 together

If I was closer I could have crimped a new one on for you...

Cheap and easy . . . .

Get an RJ45 coupler (£1.50) and some epoxy resin (?Aralidite?) the broken plug into the coupler and tape'em up !
