Looking to get a shoot 'em up. Which one would you recommend?

Quake3 Team Arena
Unreal Tournament
Unreal 2 - The awakening
Return to Castle Wolf

etc.

Any ideas???

Battlefield 1942 + Road to Rome

Best FPS in my view and the only one I keep going back to play again and again.

Cool

Having completed both Medal of Honour and Spearhead I played spearhead online for the first time last night (Got ADSL last week). I thought as I had completed both of these games I would do OK but unfortunately I got killed rather a lot.

After a couple of hours I think I died about 3 times for every person I killed. Most people who play these games online are rather good so it's a bit of a shock if you are only used to playing against the computer. Oh and in the game I hardly ever used grenades but playing online it seems to be one of the most used weapons.

Still damn good fun picking people off with the sniper rifle though!

playing online is a completely different kettle of fish to playing at home (alone)... but if you play online, you tend to pick up a lot more skills and when returning to playing the set levels at home the computer AI characters usually seem sh1te

Unreal 2 isn't online - single player only at the moment.

(Add it seems a bit temperamental and crashes quite a lot!)

Unhappy

After reading all this talk about counterstrike I got hold of a copy and decided to see if it is as good as you all make out.

I played it for about 5 minutes, thought the graphics were rubbish and went back to MOHAA and Battlefield 1942.

By all means play it if you are into 5 year old games or only have a Pentium 2.

Either that or he didn't bother getting the hi-definition gfx pack for it which makes it look 100% better.
I like counterstrike, UT, Quake3, and I think I've had one game of BF1942.

Another vote for MOHAA and spearhead. I have BF1942 too, but prefer online Spearhead.

Counter-strike, played properly, with a proper team using good tactics, is an excellent game. The graphics may not be cutting edge, but then I play games because of the gameplay and scope they offer me as a games player, not how good they look. And no, I don't have a P2 and a crap gaphics card.

I've played CS since beta1, way back when it first came out, when you could do gun running back to your spawn area (guns didn't disappear between rounds), and the maps where really basic (cs_mansion anyone?).

Over 6 major releases later, and a full alpha release, the game is extremely polished, has been refined and perfected - the developers (unpaid for the most part btw) took all comments and criticism and kept refining the gameplay until it got to its current state. How many games from publishers today have nothing but bugs in them? MOHAA:Spearhead? 55 meg patch needed just to make it playable.

I guess anyone coming and playing it today, for the first time, might knock it on its look alone, but for a seasoned veteran, theres nothing that can touch it.

As you suspected I didn't download the "hi-definition gfx pack for it which makes it look 100% better" which is probably why I felt it was an insult to my PC to make it run such an old game.

And as for "That means he got his a$$ whupped", I didn't even get to play it online as I only got as far as the sniper part of the training mission before turning it off and removing it from my PC.

Maybe I just don't get it but even with improved graphics I think the game is going to feel clumsy and dated compared to Spearhead.

Its each to their own with FPS games...

...CounterStrike? Ok IMHO, but the script kiddies and cheats have killed it (unless you can find a decent server with honourable players) Looking dated now, but the simple(r) graphics mean most PC's can run it quite comfortably.

..BF1942. Excellent, despite the glitches. Needs a decent PC to get the best out of it, along with a broadband connection. How many other games give you the freedom that this one does? The server is a CPU hog though, and thus its not that well supported by server hosts.

..Quake (series) In their day, 1 and 2 were the dog's nads. Now, its a bit tedious, however Capturestrike is an excellent mod. Love or hate the Quake series, let's face it - you have to respect them as 80% of other games wouldn't exist without their engine.

..Unreal (series) - IMHO - along the lines of Quake3 in playablility - but the maps in UT2003 are simply stunning.

..SoF1 / SoF2. I'm biassed here, so I won't go into these.... but SoF1 is still my no.1

..Medal of Honor series.... I love WWII theme, I loved the single player versions... the multiplayer didn't cut it with me tbh, but I know plenty of people who rave about it.

There are many other games like these, that I could probably sit here all day and whitter on about.

Play them all. Don't throw them down if you get killed a bit too often to begin with. Perservere .... the community out there is as important as the game tbh.... approach it correctly, and you'll meet a whole new group of friends.

I travel annually to Holland to meet a group of friends I met through Soldier of Fortune. What an event that usually is!!

You have to get into CS not just play it for 5 minutes. The attraction is that its not all about being a good shot. Its more about tactics and knowing what your enemy is going to do. A team of half organised mediocre players can beat a couple of decent players. Watching Pro clans at work is like seeing an SAS documentary. Flashbangs being used, voice-comms, split teams, ambushes, eco rounds, bunking teammates up vents so they can attack the opposition from behind etc.

What is this advanced gfx patch to beef the gfx up? Im still playing on 1024 res (on a 19" IIyama) as otherwise people get to small and they are harder to shoot at range. Better gfx would be cool. Only have an athlon 1.4 and gf2

I've ended up buying Quake3Arean/Team Arena and UT2003.

Quake is instantly playable for me, wicked graphics and fast, fluid and fun to play.

Unreal cuts the mustard in the graphics dept: i've only got a GeForce3 ti500, but it runs and looks wicked, not had enough time to get into the multiplayer side yet

Is there any newbie servers for online games? Now I have my new amazingly quick PC and full on 128mb graphics i am in a position to have a go.

But i cant be arsed being killed every 5 minutes.

Quite like CS type covert ops type games.

IMHO to get the best From CS you need to join clan and play in organised matches or find servers where people will play CS as it was meant to be and not playing it like Quaker-strike, camping and fragwhoring.

My clan server is
212.42.10.250:27015 <=SAS=> Clan Server

Heres a few servers for CS they are generally full of good peps and fair games.

212.42.10.242:27015 YO | Clan Server One (FF ON) Clan-Serv

212.42.10.251:27015 [O.G.P.U.] Clan Server

212.42.10.230:27035 SH!TE Clan, Dont kill your team

212.42.10.230:27025 SH!TE Clan, Ye Olde Server

212.42.10.230:27015 SH!TE Clan, The Toliet Flush
