screen settings on the wrong size ? ?

i'm borrowing the old man's laptop whilst my computer is away being fixed.

the screen setting is on 1280 x 1024

it looks like everything i look at is half size

if i resize it to 1280 x 1024 or 800 x 600, the viewing area gets smaller ( into the middle of the screen with a large black border )

any help would be appreciated

it is a dell laptop running windows millenium

The video card and/or screen can probably on support a single screen resolution. Try changing font sizes etc to get something you can read.

Have a poke around in the bios setting for something like stretch display. A few Toshiba laptop's have this festure / setting !
But do agree with the above on could only support one resolution

I think the optimum for dells is 1024*768.
Not sure about the most recent dells.
