ok, got me router. i am using an NTL cable modem with XP Pro. switch the computer off unplugged the rj45 from the 10/100 and plugged it into the WAN socket in the router. then used a cable running from port 1 on the router to the 10/100 card in the pc. now when i rebooted i got the number one port light and green wan light flickering. all good so far. on reading the instructions i am asked to logon to the belkin site at 192.168.2.1 this logon screen asks me for a password. wtf. my net connection is ok. i can surf no probs. has xp configured the router all by itself and how can i tell if NAT is working.

cheers

If you can get to external web sites I would guess NAT is working fine.
The address you typed 192... etc is your router and it has an internal password. You can login to the router to reconfigure, but for most people it's just plug and go. You might wish to change the router config at a later date of course, perhaps when you've read the manual ;-)

There are some additional FAQ's here which might help:-
http://web.belkin.com/support/faq_qa.asp?pid=12&cid=

Not sure what model you have, but the Belkin website has some online walkthrough configuration screens which might also be of use.

A NAT sits inbetween the public Internet and the network it serves, and works by rewriting IP addresses and port numbers in IP headers on the fly so the packets all appear to be coming from (or going to) the single public IP address of the NAT device instead of the actual source or destination.
So if your web browser is getting out to the outside world and your PC has an IP address along the lines of 192.168.?.? then NAT is configured and working fine.
