Underclocking - can it be done?
#1
I have a Del Inspiron laptop which officially takes PC100 SODIMM memory modules. I want to get more memory, but PC100 costs roughly double what PC133 costs.
Can I put PC133 memory modules in the machine, which will (probably) try to run them at 100Mhz?

Yup, 133 will run fine at 100. I had this configuration once when I wanted more memory, but wanted to be able to upgrade the motherboard at some point in the future to a 133 spec.

Make sure that you can easily return the memory if it doesn't work, so pay using your own credit card and use your personal details if it's for business.
I bought loads of PC133 ram for our Dell workstations (just std generic stuff) and it didn't work. Was a nightmare to get a refund. Even though the spec of the chips was the same as the Dell-supplied stuff it didn't like them. The chips worked in other non-Dell workstations.
I've only used Dell-supplied memory for our laptops, but PC133 stuff will happily run at PC100 rates. Just make sure you can easily return them. There should be no administration fees for doing so either, but cover your back.
