Wide Area Network Help New Setup
#1
can anybody advise,
my company is just about to open a branch office in the states with around 5 people so we need a whole new setup to involve a WAN.
They will need new kit the works , but I have been asked on how to setup the WAN....... with 1 terminal linking into their 5 point setup.
My thinking is this (please let me know if it is wrong etc)
USA
1 NT server & Router & Suitable Line
5 pc's that will link in on their LAN setup
UK
1 pc & router & suitable line
the pc here is setup with their network settings (accounts etc created on their server)
the pc here via the router just dials into their server.
if the above is on the right line , how does the pc on our side get into their network and act as a remote client ?
thanks for this guys
jase
if anybody needs to email me rather than post on the board no problems

What I've got here to link our two offices...
End 1 (Main office)
W2K server, with DNS, WINS, DHCP, etc etc & Active Directory/Domain
Firewall/router etc etc
IP range 192.168.1.x
End 2
W2K server with a DNS, DHCP
Firewall/router
IP range 192.168.2.x
Set up RAS (Remote access services) & set up Static Routes...
End 2 VPNs into End 1 automatically or every time theres a failure tries to reconnect
Essentially, End 2 is seen as connected to End 1 as if on a Lan. That allows users @ End 2 to authenticate via End 1 for access to network resources. For instance, Exchange Server running @ End 1 is totally accesable by End 2 as if they were there.
I have a Proxy Server @ both ends to control local Internet Access as well.
The fact it is in the US should be no different to being in two different towns in the UK.
Try & get a nice big line though, as it'll speed things up a lot - its fine over ADSL but some things are a bit slow.
Install VNC on all machines, so you can remotely control the US over the network & set up the End 2 server to accept incoming VPNs from you, j/i/case there is a routing problem.
Speak to WillieF - he knows more than I do

True you do not need both. What type of line are you having put in ? You are best if you can do it, to go for a W2K setup, this allows AD (Active Directory) to be used, this has quite a few advantages over win NT. For a start Win2K domains are self replicating between PDC's (no need for BDC's).
