Linksys Router and MSN
#1
Folks
Just got a Linksys router/switch/4 port hub and I am having mega problems getting the webcam to work with MSN Messenger. I have read that it is a problem, although people do think there are ways around it..... However I can't get it to work - Do any of you guys have a fix that will work ??
Cheers

Guys,
The problem is with the way that MSN works. There are designated ports for Chat, Clipboard, Audio, etc. and these can all be opened by port forwarding in your firewall. The problem comes when you are using Video, as the port for Video is negotiated between the two ends and is in some massive range, so you would need to forward all the possible ports, which is impossible.
I have the Linksys BEFSRW41, or whatever it's called, the 4 port CABLE/DSL router, firmware upgradeable, and it works for me How?, you ask
Well, the router has a 'DMZ host' facility which effectively places your machine in a DMZ the other side of the firewall, which is clearly not something you want to do. However, when wanting to do family chats with the Oz g/f I would turn it on and then off again after, using ZoneAlarm for protection whilst 'exposed'.
However, after a recent firmware update, the router now supports Universal Plug 'N Play Port Forwarding, or UPnP, which means that with XP and XP Messenger the webcam works out of the box with no router changes

Nick,
No worries. HHxx is right, you have to activate UPnP, I can't remember exactly how, but it should be fairly obvious in the web config somewhere.
Yes, there is a specific version of messenger for XP:
