Who has made a VCD?

Nero's quite good at doing it.
It standard uncompressed mpg/avi's it's fine.
But if you use the de/encoding software to convert the file over before putting on the cd it takes ages and I found the picture quality looks a little iffy (like a slight picture judder every 5 seconds or so)

When starting with an AVI file, I use:
VirtualDub to strip the audio out as a WAV file.
TMPGEnc to combine the WAV and the AVI together to get the mpg file.
Nero (selecting the Video CD option) to burn onto a CDR.
When starting with a small mpg file, I use:
Nero (selecting the Video CD option) to burn onto a CDR.
Step-by-step instructions here, along with locations of the software
TMPGEnc and VirtualDub are both Freeware, although Nero isn't!

Side issue (how fast is it?):
Dual Processor PIII 550MHz/256Mb RAM (PC100)/80Gb HDD(2mb cache)
Audio decompression - 3 minutes (for 70 minute avi)
Video conversion - 140 minutes (for a 70 minute avi)
P4 2.4GHz/512Mb RAM (PC2700)/120Gb HDD(8mb cache)
Audio decompression - 1.25 minutes (for 70 minute avi)
Video conversion - 30 minutes (for 70 minute avi)
CD Burning - Dependant on writer and media!

Yes had a similar problem, tried to burn a 700mb avi (or was it a mpeg) using Nero, and 1 hour later failed because there was not enough space. Also as it was 1hr 30 mins does that mean I cannot burn it onto CD?
Any help would be great!

I was about to post the same question as Dunk.
I'm trying out on SVCDs. The quality is not bad. TMPGEnc is a great tool and gives a better picture quality than some of the "all-in-one" applications like Ulead.
VCDEasy is a nice little (free) program to make VCDs and SVCDs. I just use TMPGEnc to encode the AVI files, then import them into VCDEasy to create the SVCD.
Take a look here for lots of information and advice.

ah getting somewhere now. The new version of TMPGEnc is much better
Still cant work the logic of vcds let alone svcds. Mpgs are much larger therefore getting less on disc? Ive always been use to capturing video into avi then converting into mpgs cos theyre smaller

Invisible,
The MPGE file size will depend on the encoding you apply. Better quality will mean larger file size. There are plenty of templates about that can allow you to fit more video onto the CD, but you will suffer with image quality. I haven't tried them, as I prefer to tweek my own settings, but I can mail them to you if you like.

That would be great, thanks Nimbus
As ive said ive been used to making good quality mpgs that are smaller than the orginal avis. Its taken me awhile to work out the optimum settings, looks like i have to start all over...

has anyone also tried changing the aspect ratio? have heard you should keep the format the same, if in ntsc keep it in ntsc. Wondered how many hours it takes & whether its worth it?

DJ Dunk,
I sometimes get lip sync issues (no Hong Kong movie jokes please!! ), but it's solved by completely uncompressing the audio.
Have another look on vcdhelp and you'll see that they recommend that you split off the audio.
Cheers

No, neither /
/ have it....
It must be your DVD player that's suspect. I did a SVCD that plays fine on my Cyberhome DVD player, but the audio is about 1 second out on my brothers (more expensive )Toshiba.

Andy - Why do you strip out the audio to a wav file ?
In TMPGEnc you can select the same avi file for both audio and video. No need to split them out ?
