Been waiting for this card for ages and it turns out it's only 5-10% faster(if at all) than the Radeon 9700 pro. Plus it kicks out 70 odd Db of noise

Not impressed at all. I'll just wait for a good price-point to get the 9700-Pro instead. Sorry, NVidia... must try harder.

The 70Db of noise is when the card is operating at or near capacity, it is also measured at the fan exit.

What I find hard to justify is the fact that it takes two slots (one for the actual card and the other slot for the air cowl that sit on the card to get the air sucked in and then blown out.

Also the fact that it needs a seperate power supply is a bit greedy.

Yep, I am a pretty die hard Nvidia fan after 3dfx was assimilated by them.

I too have to say after seeing god knows how many sites note the same results, that they have released a dog

Cheers,

Nick.

MATTeL, the Radeon 9700 pro needs its own 12v take off as well.

As for noise Radeons are pretty quiet but imo their fan and heatsink are a joke. I put a Zalman Z80 on my 9700 with an 80 mm quiet fan blowing onto it side on. As my Radeon now runs much cooler than standard I can ramp the core and mem up to serious levels wihtout any artifacts so imo it should still blow the NV out of the water. The NV is only fast due to a stupidly ramped clock speed and has nothing to do with decent architecture.

With that cooler, nVidia have obviously overclocked the nuts off it as standard, which means it has no headroom to improve & companies like Leadtek & Gainward will not be able to improve on the reference design.
I don't think you will get much of a performance bump from the drivers either.
It's gonna get a real kicking when the ATI R350 comes out next month as well.

Spot the biased reviewer

Big disappointment tbh, it was so hyped up, and they've had so much time, it appears they've just overclocked the card and stuck a hoover on it

They certainly seem the most impressed with it.

All of the other reviews seem more accurate honest.

You cannee polish a turd at the end of the day.

Cheers,

Nick.

havent seen the sites mentioned above, but i thought one of the main points of this card was that it would emulate the bump mapping etc that the xbox uses not just a speed increase (or not as the case may be) or have i missed something?

Good news from Gainward:

All of Gainward’s FX PowerPack! products feature a radical new design of cooling system delivering maxi-mum performance and incredibly low noise levels. Owing to Gainward’s advanced R&D skills the maximum noise is reduced to only 7db, the same as a human heartbeat. Com-petetive products maximum noise levels can be rated as high as 70db the same level as a domestic vacuum cleaner.

Can get a 'post hacked' 9500 128 meg already done from a company for 199 bucks which seems to defeat a 9700 pro in benchmarks!

Question

I take it then that they have 100% got past the 'chequerboard' issues that both the hardware and software modded cards were displaying?

Lost interest in the mod, as seemed to hit and miss to me with the results at the time tbh.

Cheers,

Nick.

Well that company guarantee's the 'hack' and seems to be working fine, probably only certain boards though to be fair. Waiting to see the ATI 350 though, but a 'hacked' radeon 9500 or a radeon 9700 pro with the heat sink removed and heat pad replaced with artic silver 3 on it will happily do 350+ Mhz.
No money this time Nvidia!!
