Unhappy

One of the lads here @ work brought in an old AMD-K2/400 based system for me to install a new hard disk for him.

The motherboard needed the BIOS flashed to support the large disk.

I downloaded the update and run the AWDFLASH.EXE utility from the boot disk. It told me 'insufficient memory' and just dumped me to the A:\ prompt.

I then found a newer utility (flash864) and ran that, but it told me 'flash not supported' and dumped me to the A:\ prompt again.

When I switched the PC off and back on again, it justs gives one long beep, then continuous short beeps after that.

WTF?

OK, I realise flashing the BIOS is risky, but none of the utils looked like they could get as far as actually attempting the flash upgrade.

It's a GigaByte GA-5AX board. Any ideas if I can get a new flash to try or has anyone a list of POST error codes? (can't find any on the GigaByte website )

How many beeps?
The beeps determine the problem
1 beep Refresh failure
2 beeps Parity error
3 beeps Base 64K memory failure
4 beeps Timer not operational
5 beeps Processor error
6 beeps 8042 - gate A20 failure
7 beeps Processor exception interrupt error
8 beeps Display memory read/write failure
9 beeps ROM checksum error
10 beeps CMOS shutdown register read/write error
11 beeps Cache memory bad

Have motherboard on workbench with CPU, PSU, 64Mb SDRAM and video connected; nothing else.

One long beep, then a very short beep immediately after (no pause in between)

pause for a second, then very fast continuous high-pitch beeps (gave up counting at 70+)
