old classic games under Xp
#1
Anyone know how I can get classic games such as red alert and Dungeon keeper running under Windows XP?
Have tried the SW houses web sites but no joy...
If not anyone want to buy some old (ish) pc games?

You should be able to get them to work with XPs Program Compatibility mode. It's designed specifically for this situation.

Agree with the above but be warned that the performance isn't always as good as you are used to running the compatability modes.
Random example: 3D Frogger on the old girl's machine runs noticibly slower in compat mode under xp than under 98 on her old machine. However, some old games run at full whack, so hit and miss.....
XP Machine = Athlon 1533Mhz - GF 4
98 Machine = Celeron 550Mhz - Voodoo 3
Cheers,
Nick

There is a patch procedure available for Red Alert 1 on XP. As said above, run the installer in compatability mode. After that, you need to replace one of the Westwood libraries with a patched version.
Full details as well as the patch itself are here:

I've never actually tried the XP patch myself, as I don't run XP.
