For one reason and another (please don't ask) tried to connect to the internet with an old Pace Linnet 34fx modem. Response was "no dialtone". Am I right in thinking this is due to the fact that I used my 56K modem to telephone line cable as I don't have the original modem to telephone line cable (which I believe may be analogue 2 wire mmm..) If this is correct anyone know where I can get one of these cables/know how to modify existing one.

have you got the drivers installed correctly? you can "test" the modem by going to control panel/modems/diagnotics, click on your pace modem and click on more info. it will then "query" your modem. if you get back some text about the modem, then you got the drivers install pretty much OK.

modem cables should be all the same. have you got another modem cable you can try on?

Suba

Had the modem working 6 months ago with no probs. Only thing I can think of is that I've lost original cable. Did the diagnostics (OK) and reinstalled drivers.

thanks anyway

Could well be the cable, as there's a couple of different pinouts available for modem to line cables.

Seems to me like it could be the settings for the dialup - check to make sure it is set to uk.

Are you running line waiting at all?

Also a test, load up hyperterminal, set it to use the modem, and type in the follow commands.

ATX3
ATDT <number>

See if it then dials.

Other than the above points about cabling (2, 4 or 6 wire seems to be the critical question), are you dialling out of an office with an internal exchange of some kind, might need a '9,' on the number? Sorry if you'd thought of that.
