When i tried formatting it, goes so far then makes a 'scratching' noise for a few seconds and refuses to go any further.Tried fdisk and get the same result

Its a 40Gb ibm deskstar.

Red face

Is it the click of death type noise?

As its a IBM drive, download the drive fitness tester from ibm's site and run that. Will take a while to run but hopefully should sort it out. If that fails then their isn't much you can do unless you have warranty(SP?) left.

Richi, IBM offer a 3 year warranty so don't bin it unless it is over three years old.

You don't need a receipt, just fill in the serial on IBM's site, they'll give you an RMA number and details where to send it (somewhere in holland!). Just had a replacement back for a 60GXP I had that failed.

Right, just finished using their drive checker utility.. and the drives knackered.

Failure Code: 0x75 - Defective Device.Component Failure.
Technical Result Code(TRC): 7500C588

I'll send a mail off to them and see what i get back

Cheers people

Looks like your right Andrew, got an 'RMA' number off them and have to send it off back to them, sounds like a result!
