Cool

My computer is now built and all went well. My new snag is this. When I booted my computer up for the first time, I tried to format the new hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 80Gig) at the A promt by the usual method, A:format C:. However the message came back that the format was incompatible (or something like that). When I tried to install my OS an error came back saying that the C drive needed a MS DOS format (or something like that). It also mentioned something about NFTS and/or HFTS formats.
I apologise for being vague but I'm not sure what is going on at this stage. I am hoping that some of this will ring a bell with someone and they can help me.

Any help appreciated,

Craig.

After building the machine your procedure should be.

1. Go into BIOS and make sure "Boot from CDROM" is checked
2. Insert Windows CD
3. Reboot computer

...at which point , as the computer starts up, it'll boot the cd in the drive, which will start the installation of windows.

As the installation of windows starts, this is where you'll sort out your partition and format.

NB: I'm assuming you're installating something like WindowsXP or Windows2000 ?

have you setup the Fdisk and partitions correctly.

Boot disk
at prompted write fdisk

then

select the 1st option at the top( or check to see if any partitions are there)

the use the maximum space(Unless partitioning it)

Then once complete check the status (Will say its active etc)

Re boot, then try format c:

Should work. Might be useful

Sorry - I'm with Daz on this...

Craig

New PC - right? So no previous OS installed etc. I'm presuming that you are installing XP.

XP cannot understand FAT & it doesn't want to be installed on it, so hence the errors.

As DazV says, let the CD boot the machine & once started on the OS setup, you will have options for creating partitions & formating.
