Haven't got a clue where to start

Its a D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router. Not sure what I need to do to get the ADSL connection running. I can see the router and get into the configuration so far . . .

Then I have to input a load of information that I don't have, like:

Encapsulation method
VPI value
VCI value
Username (Got this )
Password (And this )

Do I need to get this info from Freeserve ?

Thanks

Great thanks. I'll have a tinkle with it when I get home.

Are these settings ISP specific ?

Many thanks Ian

The ISP will be able to tell you the settings, but as the majority are still using BT's DSLAM's then this settings should work.

Any problems this evening drop me a mail.

ADSL settings for any BT based service should be the same. Have a good google.

There are one or two other ISPs who are making use of Local Loop Unbundling to offer their own ADSL infrastructure. Generally they tend to be cheaper as the infrastructures dont have to scale to the same levels and they've picked the most profitable areas to start in.

Great, I'll do some net research too then

My speeds through my Alcatel modem were cr@p, only about 150kbps downstream, will this improve with a router or have I got a cr@p line ?

Be Wary of this application above, if you intend to use Xbox Live you need an MTU value of 1465 or above

MTU adjustment will at some point become automatic and transparent to users (for TCP anyway) ....
