This isn't an invitation or excuse to start a flame war - just a query.

Fosters' evaluation thread was locked yet there are many many bits of evaluation software published by companies and available for free download from those companies. e.g. ZoneWall. various McAfee AV software. Not everyone may be aware of the genuinely good software which may be available for non-commercial free use.

Now obviously Chis believed Fosters to be alluding to pirate/hacked software. However what was written was not about hacked software - it was about quite legal and freely available stuff. No links to such sites were published.

How careful does Scoobynet really have to be ? Surely unless peope are publshing URLs to clearly illegal activities or openly discussing it then Scoobynet is safe. I would find it hard to beleive that use of the word "evaluation" and a "winky" smilie in the same post would be enough to land SdB in court.

I think ScoobyNet has to be careful not to err too far towards caution and risk the free-flow of genuinely useful information which makes it such a good resource.

"Chis believed Fosters to be alluding to pirate/hacked software"

no expert but i cant quite see it working in court "your honour, with the use of a small yellow circle, which was winking, he alluded to illigality"

how does "i drive home at 30mph " sound, should i now expect a visit from Readings traffic cops?

Cool

Good point, Tiggs. The wink probably isn't something that would stand up in court.

Keep it OT please Mark.

MarkO gets another thread locked

I agree with the thread's point tho' - I never mentioned anything specific apart from reference to perfectly normal evaluation software.

Certainly some valid points made. I was galloping around this afternoon as we'd had some kit die. I think I read the as I suspect it was intended but I'll certainly stand to be corrected if I took it the wrong way.

Free evaluations like ZA (I ran that for ages and I install it on other people's PCs), AVG anti-virus etc are useful utilities. If it's genuine free software, then by all means discuss.

For paid-for-software, it's not hard to find somewhere to download it from assuming you like popups (well, so I'm told!). Best avoided IMHO.

If you need to evaluate McAfee software and want to be on the right side of the EULA just ask.

Could do a group buy. Volume discounts are pretty good.
