You don't really have to power off the machine, but it is best to do so.

It would be advisable to switch off before connecting /disconnecting ( unless they are removable drives.)
But even if it is the new machine would need to be restared in order to see it anyway.

For scsi each device has a number. You cannot have two devices with the same number on the same controller.( Usually called scsi id's)
The number is usually set up using 3-4 switches on the drive.
And goes from 0-7 or 0-15 ( also remember the scsi card has a number as well.)

Remember to terminate the last device in the scsi chain (assuming you have more than one device).

'Unmount' it from the SCSI bus using your SCSI manager (should be one) Then, you can power down the drive and , then disconnect physically from the server.

Re-attach to the new server, power on the drive, and then mount it (if needs be.)

Otherwise shut down both and swap the drive
Viel Gluck!!

what server is it? The latest Generation 2 servers can use the pluggable tape drives which enable you to move a tape unit around without powering the server up or down.

We wouldn't reccomend taking a non pluggable device out of a server without turning it off.
