not to be outdone by ChrisB we have a 100 meg pipe to t'internet that only costs 11k per year
having said that you dont often get much above 1 meg per second as you are limited by the other end.
The fastest I have seen it was 2.4meg per second
edited to add - PTMW - OURS is bigger than yours

just downloaded a 70MB demo of a Star Wars real time strategy game and could not believe just how fast it was
Is this typical? - I have a 50:1 contended 512k circuit with a Zyxel Prestige 650H router

Dunno as have yet to try it out properly myself but my boss has just had it installed at his house & needed some "tech help" to configure ( ) so I went round & did the job...
At the same time, I took the opportunity to download E2K SP3 (165mb ) & it took 1hr 15mins with an indicated transfer speed of around 34.5Kbits sec, which I reckon equates to around 300K as opposed to 500K. Not impressed & I'll be monitoring it when ADSL is installed at the office. He has a "business" connection so should have a better contention ratio than joe soap, but it was at 16:30 during the day, so that might account for it...

Hehe dont even start. Have downloaded service packs to my CS server at over 10mb/sec over the net. The only prob is that most remote servers even on decent links wont let one connection have much more than 1mb if that.

Shunty,
That doesn't sound expensive for that size of pipe. We have a 256Kb Leased Line at work and even it costs us several thousand per year
Would you guys recommend ADSL/Broadband for business? I'd much have a couple of ADSL/Broadbands pipes that a cr@ppy 256Kb leased line.

@ SL2 & ChrisB
Some of us make do with a 1Mb cable line at home!! Even though it was peaking at 160kb/s and averaging 130kb/s!!
I guess it will do!! Kind of puts our work 512k leased line to shame!!

100mb link to the internet for £11k a year - wtf is that then as it sure as hell aint a leased line? Youd be lucky to get an E1 for that with most corporate ISP's.

You wanna see the speed I could get at university last year, I was averaging 300k per second, but did see up too 900!
All for a one off £70 including a network card then unlimited all year!

lads, the company I work for own 51% of an ISP...hence 11k for a 100 pipe (I meant that was unbelievably cheap), rather than a leased line, about 50 T1's then

Keep the slow but reliable leased line. ADSL and boradband in general are not business case reliable. Having said that get your boss to give you a 2Mb broadband as a reslient backup
I am currently working the scottish equivalent of telehouse and have access to some very very nice pipes... but as per ptmw request I am not going to mine is bigger than yours!!...

The biggest pipes we run are ST16's AFAIK (2.4gbit). We host a lot of the SuperJANET network hence why they are so fast for people downloading at Uni. These links are mainly for inter-county and transatlantic links.

If u you live in the Telewst cable area you have a choice of 512 or 1mb service at £30 £40 per month respectively as a sinle service.
Next year (Jan) I am trialing a 2Mb service with Telewest. Currently I have 1meg and its so feckin fast. XP service pack downloads in mins. Took longer to install than download.
