Avi - maybe you can think about 'getting better' and coming back to work to help your understaffed collegues out??

Oh I forgot, your car's not been repaired yet has it - well hurry up so you can come back in?

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this. A manager gets a new laptop. He needs it as the old one is still on Win95 with about 16k of RAM. So I spend a couple of hours staging it and copying over his old files.

Next his manager comes into see me and wants to know why he's now got a better one than his.

The user who sits opposite him wants to come in to see me to ask the same questions.

I DONT KNOW! I only set them up as requested!! I don't order them, or say who gets what!

Thankfully we no longer do the hand-me-down procedure where the top man gets the new one and everyone else gets theres passed down the line resulting in 3 or 4 re-stagings.

Put a new asset tag on his old one, change the desktop settings (backround, icon locations, etc) and give it back to him saying that it's a new one. He probably won't notice

I used to work for a .com company, where we spunked cica $200,000,000 up the wall in 2 years.

We had bods asking for all sorts of stuff.
Some just by-passed the purchasing dept, and claimed it on expenses!!! - with not an eyebrow raised!!

Some new "project planner" bint 'demanded' a Palm Pilot.
I told her to *uck off and justify it.
She made a complaint and got what she wanted. Then she realises you just can plug the thing in without at least one brain cell, so it sat unused... Another £200 down the pan.

The CFO wanted a sony laptop, then a cd writer for it, a top of the range sony digital camera for his holidays, leather cases for all, big flatscreen monitor for his home, desktop for his home, new mobile phones, for, get this him and his wife (who didn't even work there!!)

This went on with 90% of the staff there.

If i knew it would go unnoticed, i would have done the same, but i have a strong morale issue over buying kit for the hell of it!!!
(i have also worked at the other end of the scale, where we write on the back of scrap paper for notes!!!)

All of this was at the expense of the Investors!!!

I cannot believe it's legal.

Rant over

BB (ps i had a fooking great laugh working there though!!!)

i remember putting up with this **** when i worked in Marconi !!

damn that place was full of some freaky people

every dept was at war with each other, every time anyone got new kit the nosey ****ers would be out in force then they would complain to their managers

now i work in a better place where only the MD can waste money (and boy does he like to waste it )

Shunty,
i got given my notice, worked 29 days of the 30, had a leaving do, and on the 30th day, the ******* gave me my job back.

They got a bit scared, because they wanted to move office, and theres only me doing all the i.t here!!!

they paid me my holidays, said i could keep the money for them, gave me my 6 days holiday back and now pay for my travel expenses.

thanks for sparing me a thought...

all's well that ends well, hopefully the IT market will pick up for all of us, but i think there a rougher times ahead, unfortunately.

regards

BB

Boys, boys , you have got it set up all wrong ...

It's the IT department that needs all the new kit as we have to:

a) make sure it's suitable for rolling out to the rest of the company.
and
b) fix it when the lusers screw it up.

Common sense really

Unfortuantely the NHS Seems to still be at this stage , which results in a full day just because someone has a new PC

Cool

Nimbus

Works throughout the range m8

Internet access as a point...

Everyone believes that they need it - do they heck However, give someone access to a particular reference site (bt.com say) & the rest of them come running demanding it

Same with programs...

"Do you really need email access to work effectively on behalf of the company? NO! - so F off!!"

But I have to agree that the best kit should always go by the IT department May not be the newest, or cutting edge, but guaranteed that my PC/Workstation is faster, more capacity & more efficient than the rest of the users

your all looking at it the wrong way, let them have everything they want Internet access,Laptops, palmtops blah blah. That way technology becomes core to running the business, then IT step in and start running it. Think Heroin Dealer, free fixes then wham your hooked. That way we'll all be keeping our jobs

camk, you have it WRONG, that means work.

give them the very minimum, then stop access to this minimum from time to time.

Minimum work, max satisfaction!!!

more drinking time as well!!!
