Anyone used one of these packages that they would recommend? You know, design and lay out your rooms, garden etc. then see them in glorious 3d...

Hello
The best (but complicated and extrememly expensive) is Archicad.
A reasonable one that I used to model my house and draw the Floorplan is FloorPlan 3D. This allows you to create everything in 3D, create VRML movies (for wandering around) and take photorealistic pictures.
