A while ago I posted asking if it were possible to watch region 1 DVD's on a PS2. After advice here my gf went and bought a multi-region disc for £10. We finally got round to watching a region 1 DVD and it was playing in black and white.

We have since read the (very) small print of the multi-region DVD and it says "Your TV needs to be able to operate in NTSC mode - some older TV's may not support this mode"

Firstly, what is NTSC mode? Secondly, is there a multi region DVD that doesn't have this restriction?

My TV is about 6 years old and nothing in the setup indicates anything about NTSC.

NTSC - Never Twice Same Colour => Inferior to our PAL standard ;-)

If your region 1 film is NTSC then there's very little you can do to convert to PAL other than buy a NTSC-PAL convertor box or buy a TV (Sony's general handle both NTSC and PAL).

Hope this helps.

My old TV had one SCART socket that was RGB/NTSC compatiable and the other was a bog standard SCART socket.

With one I got a perfect picture, the other gave a good but B&W picture.

If you have another SCART socket on the back of your television, try that first. If you don't have a socket or it also gives a B&W picture, you'll have to either:

1) buy a new television
2) buy a NTSC to PAL convertor from somewhere like Maplin

As well as all that, if your TV can take an RGB signal via one of the SCART sockets, you might be able to watch region 1 DVDs on another multiregion DVD player, instead of the PS2. This will miss out the NTSC bit.

Thanks for the advice guys.

As a NTSC to PAL converter is £50, it looks like I'll be adding a multi-region DVD player to the Christmas pressie list.

It does this because the refresh rates are different between PAL and NTSC. PAL converters do help this and enable you to watch NTSC and a PAL telly, but the image quality suffers as a result. You will likely have the same problem with a multiregion dvd player (unless it has a PAL convertor built in).

IMHO, if you want to watch region 1, you need to upgrade your tv. Probably worth getting a proper dvd player as well, because the picture output from the ps2 is not exactly brilliant in comparison...

Cheers,
Iain

I bought a Beko 28" widescreen television from Argo and it didn't break the bank with change from £250!! (including free delivery!)

NTSC(60Hz)/RGB - Both SCART sockets
S-video compatible - One of the SCART sockets

NTSC - Multi-region DVD player
RGB - PS2 & GC
S-Video compatible - To allow AV amp to switch between sources! Although I needed a S-video to SCART lead!

The picture quality is not as good as say a Sony or Panasonic, but it's pretty damn good!
