Looking at 120Gb Hard Drives for my X-Box . . . .
Which would you prefer as the most reliable, quiet and cool (cold, not ) ? :
a) IBM Deskstar 120GXP (aka Deathstar)
b) Seagate Barracuda ATA V
c) Maxtor DiamondMax Plus9
Any others worth considering ?
Cheers.

I was advised to get the Deathstar, which i did. I have had no problems with it. There is supposed to be a know issue with the 7200rpm disks getting too hot and the Xbox switching off due to overheating, but i think thats a myth. No one i've spoken to who has that disk has seen any problems, and i have had some lengthy PGR/Rallisport sessions !!
I think the Deathstar has a resonable big cache aswell.
At the end of the day, its up to you, its driven alot by price. I got mine for under 100 quid
If you want help setting up EvoX then let me know mate.

Dodgy geezer Sounds like a plan though
The Seagate is top of my list at the mo, although I've spoken to a few people now who have the IBM in their X-Boxes. Too many scare stories of the older Deskstars putting me off though Probably shouldn't worry, but the price difference is minimal.

I think the 40gb Deskstars were quite troublesome from what i was told, but the 120gb one is fine.
Get it sorted mate, i have divx stuff, mp3s and games on mine. On that new neXgen dashboard you are going to be able to rip DVDs to the HDD too for backup purposes

Why do you need a larger hard drive in the first place? I asked on a newsgroup about hard drive failure and nobody knew of anyone with a failed hard-drive.
A quicker HD yes, but not larger.

Alan, with a chip and a larger hard drive you can play games without swapping CD's. Of course the more unscrupulous could hire games and put them on the HD.

The main reason to upgrade the HDD is to use it as a portable mp3 player/divx player/vcd player/games machine. Saves having to carry around all my game disks and dvd's.
Agree the 5400rpm drive should be cooler and a safer bet in the confined space of an X-Box.

X-Box Live is no problem. The Matrix chip is not soldered to the board and has dip switches to enable and disable it when ever you want. A lot of people install an external switch for ease of operation.

Safer because the 7200rpm drives do run hotter than the 5400's and the space inside the X-Xbox is very limited. The breather hole is also likely to be very restricted.
Drives only operate between certain temperatures (eg. 60 degrees max for the Seagate) and if it goes over that then I risk losing my data. Better safe then sorry.
Yes an external drive is an option, it has been done Not something I want to attempt though !

After taking my Xbox apart to fit the HDD and X-Ecuter, I can see that the space for the HDD is confined. I know of alot of people with 7200rpm disks in their Xboxes and no-one has had a problem with overheating. But, better safe than sorry i suppose (not for me though !!)
Quite a few people with chipped Xboxes are doing the Xbox Live beta test, and as Dunk mentioned earlier, with most chips you can disable it with a switch.

Gone for the Seagate Barracuda . . . .
Service & Support
3 years warranty
Average Seek Time 9 Ms
Cache / Buffer Size 2 MB
Data Transfer Rate 100 MBps
Formatted Capacity 120 GB
Interface Type DMA/ATA-100 (Ultra)
Spindle Speed 7200 Rpm
Sorted
Didn't go for an ATA133, no point really.
Right, next to upgrade the RAM
