Running old DOS games in XP
#1
Tried running GOAL! but get the following error messages within CMD...
Not enough free base memory - requires 590,000 bytes
or...
Not enough expanded (EMS) memory
Upon checking "mem" the following information is displayed...
655360 bytes total conventional memory
655360 bytes available to MS-DOS
627792 largest executable program size
1048576 bytes total contiguous extended memory
0 bytes available contiguous extended memory
941056 bytes available XMS memory
MS-DOS resident in High Memory Area
I have changed various settings within the properies of the goal.exe file to allow maximum memory allocation but to no avail.
Any ideas on how I can get this to run please?
Many thanks.

Coo, this will take a miracle to get workin !
Dos used to work where you had
640k base memory of which some was taken up by mouse drives etc.
EMS which contained the 640k - 2048k range , unless specified otherwise.
XMS - this was the area which filled hte 2048k upwards. Normally.
Now when windows 95 + came along , they chunked all the mem together , unless you specified otherwise , win2k/nt/Xp did away with this full stop.
I think ( think in itallics ) you could get a DOS 5 or 6 bootdisc from http://www.bootdisk.com/ and follow the instructions.
You might need to configure the disc to give you th required amounts of EMS / XMS , PM me , or email me if you need any further help .

in the config.sys there should be a line that looks something like
C:\blah\blah\emm386.exe
amend to
C:\blah\blah\emm386.exe 4096 /highscan
Trying ( desperatly ) to remember the command switches ...

Boot menu on a very old PC to balance EMS/XMS, and then two other options to load memory for either XMS or EMS to ensure the games worked!
