yes (well Kazaa Lite anyway) but only because I only have ISDN. For broadband I reckon DirectConnect is probably a better bet.

i love the look of direct connect but can not use cos it keeps telling me i can not connect unless i share 40 kb wow..
Limwire is nice too but i can not share with it cos of my firewall.
Kazaa is bad unless you use the lite.

Are they faster? Kazaa seems pretty slow.

Well a lot of the speed depends on what your speed is eg 56k etc, also you could both be DL at the same time from someone else.

E-Donkey seems to be one of the best networks atm. http://www.edonkey2000.com/ The client is not very good so use E-Mule which is far better. http://www.emule-project.net/

Another option is overnet which uses a modified version of the e-donkey network with no servers. http://www.overnet.com/

Download time doesn't only depend on your download speed. It also depends on how busy (and fast) the server you are connecting to is.
I use KazaaLite. Seems to be one of the best. Best idea is to start of a number of downloads at the same time (same file - different location) and then cancel the slowest ones.

Also, with KazaaLite, in the (version 2.0) installation folder, you'll find an .exe called SpeedUp (I think it's called that, I'm writing from work). The purpose of this is to launch Kazaa Lite and then at regular intervals do a "Find more sources..." on your downloads automatically. I find it works quite well and will often get d/l speeds almost up to my DSL limit.

I have Kazaa Media Desktop on my machine. Is this the same as Kazaalite? Works well on broadband but the fact that it opens up automatically when I boot up my laptop (can't seem to stop this, is there a way, does Kazaalite do this?) is annoying (especially when I'm about to do a presentation or something at work.."ooh how did that get there?")

greg go into options, you can switch off 'load automatically at PC startup' or something similar.

kazaalite is based on kazaa with all the adware and spyware removed.

Just started using Speedup, it's a winner. Some files that I've been waiting weeks for are now on their way down.

I-mesh is the best I've used but you do have to delete it in full every time you shut down your PC else it can wreck your computer you also have to delete the files it puts into your registry.

I-Mesh is also full of spyware as are many other programs

I tend to steer well clear of anything that has spyware built in for obvious reasons.

A URL worth bookmarking is http://www.tom-cat.com/spybase/index.html - this is a fairly well maintained database of suspected and confirmed programs which install "stuff" behind your back.

Got spyware or suspect you have? Here's a good site with hints on how to rid yourself of the curse:

http://www.project-insomnia.com/

Look in the install Grokster/Kazaa without spyware section for the info you need.

Best protection is a personal firewall to stop programs you don't want connecting from doing so.

Happy Peer-to-Peering

Yup, quite possibly a firewall problem.

If it's a firewall problem and you are at work trying to use P-2-P then your network admins have probably closed off all the ports you'll need to use, so none of the P-2-P programs are likely to work

Can't help you with eMule as I've not used it. I have eDonkey but don't use it that often as I found my server list was getting out of date too often and just gave up on it.

for emule this page has 3 server lists
paste one of these lists in the "update server met "box
so effectively you have multiple servers

From the KazaaLite site www.kazaalite.nl - if KazaaLite asks you to upgrade to version 2.0.2 choose NO. If you choose yes, then Kazaa will be downloaded/installed...along with the spyware.
