Question

Hi,

I was asked to look into a backup problem at one of our branch offices. Now, it was managed by someone else who has now left the company, so the setup is a bit hazy.

The overnight backup fails with an access denied message on the Exchange Mailboxes.

I've checked Backup Exec and it's using the ServiceAccount user for backups. This user is the ServiceAccount Admin within Exchange. I can backup the Exchange Directory and the Information Store, but not the individual mailboxes.

What other permissions does this account need to backup mailboxes. I use a full admin account here to backup, so I'm think that would fix it. Would like to know what the problems is first though.

Thumbs up

Thanks Chris.

Looks like the service account needs to have full Admin permissions to Exchange rather than just ServiceAccount Admin permissions.

No problem - having to set a profile for Messaging / Outlook can cause grief as well.

The account that backupexec uses on your remote servers must be the same account and domain that the backup server uses. Does that help?

don't use outlook 2002! Best one to use is outlook2000 when you setup the backup exec mailbox.

Server doesn't have Windows Messaging or Outlook installed, so that's one problem. Does it HAVE to have a mail profile for the mailbox backup to work?

Guess so by the looks of things
