I just simply took out the old HDD and put the new one in. No other hardware has been changed. If/when you do yours and need help then let me know, i documented everything i did !! There are some gotchas.
I have used the XBMP (Xbox Media Player) and succesfully played MP3, WAV, DIVX and MPEG files on the Xbox, and using the DVD-X software, played an original DVD (without the RC).
I also heard from one of the Gotmod developers that they are working on a function to rip DVDs to the HDD. Time to think about that new Maxtor 320Gb HDD that is on the way.

There is a new Xbox dashboard on the way for those of you that have a modchip installed and use an alternative. Up to now the EvoX dashboard has been the only one worth using (IMO) but there is one coming up soon courtesy of Gotmod and the X-Ecuter team called neXgen.
Have a look at the screen shots and some info here.
Such features as a built in web server for remote use of the Xbox, a facility to clone the entire HDD to another Xbox, mp3/wma music can be played in the background on the dashboard, the list goes on...

I got a X-Ecuter. It depends what version of Xbox you have as to what chip you need, as the latest ones have been changed slightly and you need th new v2 modchips. Ones to look for are X-Ecuter & Xodus/Matrix.
Its easy getting files from PC to Xbox, just use a network crossover cable to join your PC NIC to the ethernet port on your Xbox and FTP away. You have to boot the Xbox off the EvoX (at the moment) dashboard to set its IP address and netmask.

To solder or not to solder that is the question
Daves got the X-Ecuter which you solder in, mine will be the Matrix chip which requires no soldering. Horses for courses really and mobo version dependant. Mines from here. Theres a delay on orders at the mo dues to demand, so can't say about how good they are at delivering
Have a read here and here for the usual FAQs, software and tools.
Not done mine yet, but tried to keep up to date on the whys and wherefors for about 6 months.

Thanks Guys ,
Mine is a pre version 2 ( changed mobo ) XBOX , i jsut dont know anyone else that owns one so i dont have any modchip comparisons.
I have seen the solderless one , but didnt like the way how you have to align everythin !
Having said that , that is probably the one i will go for.
I didnt realise how easy it was to FTP sheesh !
Thanks again.

With the Evox dashboard, there are a load of Xbox BIOS images supplied that you FTP onto the hard disk. You can use EvoX to update the BIOS from the menus.
