Dan,
If I put in the xp cd and reformat the h/drive, is it just a case of switching the pc on again and inserting the xp disc?
cheers

From what I can remember, when you put in your XPpro CD, it gives you the options to format HD......
If not, you can always restart in MS-Dos mode and format c:
Just make sure you've got a startup disk if the **** hits the fan!!!!
Best of luck
Dan
PS I'm not an IT bod by trade, but I'm sure some others will also be able to help

HA HAAa,
Cheers Dan , I'm not a mechanic, but I'm sure you fill up the
water in the tank at the rear of the vehicle
Sounds like youv'e done this yourself, I'm sh1ttin meself at the
thought of doin this. Backed everything up that I think I need and written down all passwords I need. Does the Xp disc give you the option of formatting on 98 se? Think I will go the dos route.
C u all in three weeks!!!!!

if your PC is pretty new, then you should be able to boot up using the XP cdrom. you might need to goto the BIOS to enable the PC to boot from cdrom.
alternatively, create a rescue floppy disk in windows 98. then boot up with the floppy disk, format your HDD and then install XP. the rescue disk will have drivers to access the cdrom drive.

Make sure you keep your original modem settings.....as when you load xp the modem won't work...
You reinstall your original modem settings & drivers, connect up to register & then xp automatically gets the latest modem drivers....
This alone on the 1st xp install I did took me 8 hours as I didn't copy the modem settings & drivers..
The second & third were easy!!!

main one is get all your drivers first, updated ones etc , graphics , modems, sound, any other cards, also get service packs if required.
format HD windows 98 method boot disk,
install XP , frig the bios first so it looks for cdrom as 1st boot device,
make partition FAT32 not NTFS
a lot of stuff ie games, video does not like NTFS
my system is split fat32/ntfs
