Mafia - PC - performance issues

Hi,
Just bought myself a new PC. Spec as follows:
AMD XP 2400+
512mb PC2600 DDR RAM
Nvidia T4600i 128mb Graphics Card
Top of the range motherboard.
120gb 7200rpm HD with 8mb Buffer.
So basically nearly top spec apart from the 2600+ chip which is just coming out.
Anyway, just installed Mafia and set all the settings to 'high'. I have to say that i am really dissapointed at home sluggish (jerky graphics is places) the game becomes despite the fact that the PC is nice and quick. Could it just be a badly wrote game or is something wrong? I wonder??
