Thanks. What exactly does it do?
It has just appeared on my machine recently.
The only things I have downloaded recently are the latest version of ZoneAlarm and Lavasoft ad-aware.
Could it have been one of those?

This was actually a worm virus: "worm bugbear.a".
The effect was to try and switch off ZoneAlarm and also it attacks the system files.
Full details and solution are on the f-secure.com site.
It spreads the virus by attacking your address book and sending out emails with the worm attached. Just opening the email will let the virus out.
So be careful with any emails with exe attachments in!!!
