Why is my PC soooo slooow??? HELP!!
#1
OK, IT bods. Can anybody tell me why my PC has started to run so ridiculously slowly all of a sudden?
I am experiencing lengthy delays when booting the machine up, logging onto Internet and email, in particular.
Basic spec is P4, 1.4 Ghz, 40Gig HD, 256 SDRAM.
I've got about 27Gig free, and am not running multiple application at the same time.
Even when logging onto scoobynet, I get red crosses and blank boxes in place of photos and message icons.
I've tried defragging and clearing out junk, but it's made no difference, and ITS DRIVING ME MAD!!!
I've also noticed the LED indicating Hard disk activity is almost always on.
Any help most welcome.
Steve

First thing I'd check is if all the 256Mb of RAM is available (is it made up of multiple chips?) and how much is being used. It could be all your physical RAM is actually used and the OS is paging out to virtual memory hence all the hard disk activity.
What operating system are you using?

Thanks for the speedy responses.
OS is Windows XP.
How do I check how much RAM is being used?
Not sure whether it's mulitple chips or not, as it had 256 Mb when I ought it new (ie I haven't upgraded).
As I mentioned, I rarely open multiple applications, so this isn't an issue.
(even so,with this spec, I'd have thought the PC should be able to handle it without problem)

goto start/control panel/system and look under the general tab. it will show how many memory you got running on your PC.
you might think you got 256mb but your PC might be running less. problem could be loose memory or faulty memory slot. i know coz it happened to me on my notebook! one of my memory slot is not working, so instead of running 256mb (128mb x2), i am now running 128mb.
