USB speed problems - Help required

I have a Dell Latitude laptop at work & have tried using a USB card reader for the Compact Flash card from my digital camera.
It all works, but goes INCREDIBLY slowly! It says it will take 3 minutes but actually takes >30 minutes to download!
Anyone got any ideas as our useless 'High Tea' department are clueless, as usual!?
