Fibre to fibre

Cossover fibre?

Any idea if you can connection 2 servers directly using fibre or does it need a switch?

I think you can, but I don't wanna say yes yet

AFAIK you can, but I've never tried it myself. The multi-mode fibre cables I've used in the past had the ST connectors. Basically a seperate Rx and Tx. Not sure, but if you just swapped the Rx and Tx (ala crossover) on the 2nd device then it might work. Can't think of a logical reason why it wouldn't

Aren't the new style connectors moulded? so if the theory works, you'd need a proper "cross-over" cable.

I've heard of cross-over cables mentioned on FDDI networks.

Don't have fibre here at work otherwise I'd go and try it.

Again IMHO I recon it should work as when you link switches together, thats all you do. Unfortuntatly Im at home and donk any fibre kit here to try it with.... Best of luck.

As Ozzy says remember to switch/cross the ends over.

Effectively all fibres are cross-overs.

Can be done with either a fibre NIC in the server or an oridnary nic and a Cat5/Fibre transceiver.

(I presume you're talking 100Mb/s Ethernet ?)

Thumbs up

Now I think of it, I remember when I first started in IT, I had to deal with an old NetWare SFTIII site. They used two Fibre NIC's and a single fibre cable with the Tx/Rx cables swapped on one of the mirrored servers. And that was 6 years ago with 10Mbps Ethernet.

Surely, you're running Gigabit nowadays
