Hi All,

This is odd, if anyone can help Id be very happy!

I had a hard disk crash in my PC(Athlon, 512mb ram etc) anyway, the computer had 2 X IBM drives. SO the one that crashed Ive taken out. The other Ive unplugged for the while.

Bought a nice new Seagate 80gb drive, installed XP, everything OK.

Turn off machine, plug in the IBM drive that was OK (40GB drive ) turn on machine, bios picks it up - - but XP doesnt see it? Cant detect it either if I search.

What can I do??

I put this IBM drive in another PC running XP, it found it fine just as I expected it too.

HELP ! Anyone.

Thanks

Andy

dunno maybe an IDE/ATA controller problem on your PC? ie motherboard problem. If the HDD works fine in another pc with the same OS, that would be my logical response.

oh hangon, the IBM has an OS on it already? if so, u need to format it or remove the OS, so that XP doesnt get confused between your seagate and the IBM, thats probably the reason.

sorry no, the IBM doesnt have an OS on it.

Im now going to Frag the IBM drive, build XP on it and then see if it can see the Seagate. This is such a pain...

thanks for tips

yup if that doesnt work then u know the secondary ide/ata controller (or whatever youre using) is dead. It might even be a dodgy slave connection between the IBM and seagate, if u are slaving it? Or if youre lucky just a bad IDE cable.

Woohoo!

Sorted, thank god for that.

Right, I took the cables out of another machine and swapped them into mine, it worked no probs!

Put the ones I was using into this other computer(which also had 2 hard disks) and oddly it booted off the slave drive(which still had win2k on it) so shut down, swapped ends over and it booted off the master as it should. So it seems the cables were specific or something, I dunno.

Anyway thanks for cable idea, Bioforger its now done! 1 pint owed
