A friend if mine has a Compaq presario 5117ea, he wants to upgrade his RAM as he only has 128 MB. He was told by a mate that the only memory he could use had to be compaq's own brand which would be designed for his PC. Is this correct? I thought he could just upgrade it using normal PC100 SDRAM memory.

the official line is that your warranty becomes void if a problem occurs as a direct result of using 3rd party components (ie non CPQ branded).
