Just noticed there was an update available of version 2.6 to 3.1 so I downloaded it. Now everytime I start up my computer it dials the internet connection automatically. Was suspicious that some spyware had come in but it seems to be ZoneAlarm itself doing this. If I configure ZoneAlarm not to open on start up then no internet connection comes up either - however this makes ZoneAlarm much less use than being there all the time.
Why is it doing this and can it be stopped??
Any help appreciated

Same happening on my pc. I posted a thread about this last week. Somone replied saying they had posted a question to Zone Alarm but hadn't heard anything back.
True if you switch Zone Alarm off, ie not to load at startup then it is okay. What I was trying to do was to get Zone Alarm to automatically run when I dialed in. That way I would be happy.
However I did notice in the system config startup menu, there are a Minilog and a TrueVector exe's that run at startup time. Maybe one or both of these is causing the connection to the internet to be required!?!

Just checked and vsmon.exe which is the vector exe does indeed call up the dial up connection window!!
However this doesn't really solve anything as no doubt when Zone Alarm is ran, it will of course call the above exe which will require an internet connection.
Zone Alarm will have to put in a check to only call that exe if there is an internet connection. Then as Zone Alarm will be in the background, keep checking from time to time. Eventually when you do dial in, Zone Alarm can then call discreetly the exe.
Unless anyone knows any better?

i had the same problem with the latest of the latest version of zonealarm, so i downgraded one version and it seems OK. i know it's not a solution, but at least not annoying.
btw, goto preferences and turn "check for product updates" to manually.

zonealarm is free for personal use, and zonealarm is consider the best [1] firewall software around. norton you have to buy it.
ad-aware is NOT a firewall software, it is anti-spyware software. so different ball game there

Here's some info from a thread in the "comp.security.firewalls" newsgroup that sheds a bit of light....

Yes and plenty of previous posts have pointed out that ZA wants to dial home
to validate the reg key you're using - if it's on a database of cracked keys
then ZA shuts down.I believe ZA have posted some nonsense of their site about
lockout.zonelabs.com being "a landing page with instructions for people who
have experienced firewall hardening".
Which is, of course, a crock of ****. Do as I did and go back to the
previous version.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I gave up and changed firewalls as there's no news on a fix (and given that ZA aren't accepting the behaivour as a bug there's not much chance of one IMHO).
