Need some advice from someone in the know. Recently my pc has become very very slow. I have Norton utilities installed and it says i have 180MB of physical memory free but Cache free is around 0.0MB to 1.0 MB

When i run Norton antivirus, it doesnt pick up any virus's but as it scans C:winnt... the cache jumps back up to around 50MB. Then, as soon as i reboot, i am back to square one. Have no idea what the hell is going on.

I am running windows 2000, 1.2GHZ AMD, 256MBRAM, CDRW, DVD.

Anyhelp would be appreciated. ta

In default settings the cache size is set dymanically by windows.

Therefore the low cache free could simply be the fact that windows is setting a cache figure thats only just above what is needed at that time.

Or of course that figure could be the total amount of cache which is being increased as the virus check is run.

have a look in the temp directory and see if there are loads of .tmp files hanging about. These can slow things down, particularly on boot up. Just get rid of them if there are loads. Altrnatively, you could run disk cleanup to get rid of these and the temporary internet files and stuff.

Disable the Findfast utility if it's installed, FF is well known to be a buggy resource log.

Find Fast is installed with MS Office, its a utility that indexes the hard drive, to allow faster finding of MS Office files.

There should be a icon in the control panel for find fast, that'll give you the option to stop indexing and delete the index.

By the way what version of Windows do you have? If you have Win XP, then it'll be a tick box on the hard drive properties.

Maybe the latest W2K service pack would help:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp3/default.asp

Did it only slow down after installing Norton / something else? Maybe need to uninstall/reinstall some stuff?
