I have cable modem installed and working. Nice and fast.
Loads of Fax software out there but it all appears to need a phone no ! As far as I am aware - it has IP but no phone number
Can I get my cable modem to operate like a fax ??

No, it can't directly. The cable modem would have to have a PSTN connection and I haven't seen one of those - ever! Usually, it's just a USB (or LAN) connection (for the PC) and coax connection for the cable.
AFAIK, there are Internet companies that can allow you to send faxes via the net. Not sure how you receive faxes that way, but I'd guess you give out their own fax number and they send you received faxes via e-mail.
Other alternative is to use a cheap fax/modem and a normal land-line.

I've used it a few times and it seems to work OK, if you don't mind the advertising attached to the fax yuou send.
