Yes the higher the dpi, the better the quality. Since there's more dots per inch, you can get a much sharper picture with more detail.
Just one thing to watch though. You can get digital pics developed for about 15p per 6x4 photo. The ink catridges and photo-quality paper are quite expensive, so it's worth checking what the costs will be for printing your own.
I use an Epson Colour 860 Photo printer myself and it's very good.

Although I'm an HP fan, they just don't print pix as well as Epson. However, Epsons drink ink at an alarming rate! My 1290 is an A3 job, but I understand than most decent Epson's are almost on a par with it.
Do check out the price of the cartridges and paper though, as there are more and more minilabs taking CDs/Disks/Flash Cards now, and most of them are pretty good, and very cheap.
