Cheers Denzil_Dog. When I type 'tracert www.lancerregister.com' it just returns that it cannot find that URL. Am I doing anything wrong?

I'm using IE. Why is it just these two sites in the main that it happens to when this does occur? I mean, sites like this one are always OK. Must be some sort of common route these sites take? Could one of the links just be really **** and keep falling over all the time?

I had broadband (NTL) installed a few months ago. There are a couple of sites that I go on a lot but recently the speed of connection to two sites in particular is occasionally very slow. I mean it takes about a minute to connect to the site and each change of page on those sites takes at least a minute!

Now this is really beginning to p1ss me off. When it happens, it stays like it for a day or two every time I use these sites, before it returns to normal, only to return again at a later stage for another couple of days.

What could be causing these problems? I'm no IT specialist, to say the least. Could it be that both these sites are on the same server and there is a problem with their server? Can it be a problem with my broadband?

Any help would be much appreciated techie heads.

I thank you.

Doubt its a problem your end () More than likely just a slow link in the chain somewhere. Could also just be down to the time of the day, more traffic etc.

Only thing you can try is clearing your browsers cache to see if that improves things

Question

Could be that the sites themselves are limited on bandwidth. Can you give us the URLs?

If the problem continues, send them an email suggesting they move to a decent webhost.

DJ, When it does happen, it stays like it for a couple of days without improving at all at any time of day or night so it can't be the traffic at a particular time of day.

If it's a slow link then why does it stay like it for a couple of days and then return to normal for a couple of weeks before coming back to haunt me again?

Cheers

IIRC, the MLR is run on a private server, isn't it? That might explain why it gets a bit slow during the peak periods.

Thanks for your help guys but it isn't just peak periods. For instance it started again last night and I haven't been able to get a normal connection since, it's very very very very very slow. This will probably continue until about tomorrow if past experience is anything to go by.

Any more ideas anyone?

Actually, when I said it takes about a minute to connect/change page to/on these sites I was exaggerating - it takes longer than that...

could be a routing issue
try typing the following

tracert www.lancerregister.com

this will show you a report of all the routers that you connect to on your way to the host that the site sits on

if you post the results here we could see if there is any heavy-latency on some of the Hops

it could be a number of differant things though

Have you tried an alternative browser (Nutscrape/Internet Exploder)to see if that makes a difference ?

Yep could be NTL's routing and connection to the net. I have it the other way round here at work. I get dns errors and it can't resolve this one site. But works fast on NTL....

If its this then I supposed you can't do anything about it. But I use NTL and the mlr site works for me. I'll check the site tonight and let you know.

Thumbs up

You're right could well be NTL's routing. Try sending their tech support an email. Worth a go

So super_si, any idea what the problem is exactly? Is it down to NTL and their routing, etc? If so, I will sign up with someone else for broadband as, if this happens frequently to the sites I visit most and lasts for a couple of days at a time, then there's no point staying with them in my eyes.

Try using a proxy server. Normally your service provider should have a list of them.

If blueyonder is slow I use a proxy and it's whizz bang.

Also -try Mozilla - much quicker browser

Yeah, NTL is a 1 year contract but if they can't reliably connect me to the sites that I use most then they can shove their contract up their @rse! I had an automated mail back from them when I mailed them stating that they aim to get back to me within 24 hours.....well, it's been nearly 6 days so far, just like I've mailed to remind them.

It's been OK for about 4 days but it's started again tonight so that's another day or two without my favourite sites.

Been like it again over the last couple of days. It is really p1ssing me off now. I refuse to phone them and wait about 45 minutes to be put through to some clueless operator, so have mailed them 8 times since this first happened 33 DAYS AGO! I haven't even received an acknowledgement from them in this time. Their customer service is absolutely ridiculously poor.
