Thanks Dan but unfortunately they're out of their budget.
I'm really after an old base unit, nothing flash, does not require an internet connection but it must have a soundcard. A DVD drive is preferable but if it doesn't have one they will purchase one seperately.
Someone must have an old one knocking about they don't need

Must have a DVD ? Is this for purely installing software or is it for DVD film playback ?
If it is the later, soe crusty old PC won't be up to doing playback unless it is fairly quick...
Maybe tell us what the budget is, makes things a bit easier ?

OK they had asked me to provide sound and a CD-ROM to their current 486 which I can do no problem but I suggested to them that they should really look at upgrading. Now being a playgroup they don't budget for this type of thing but did say that they could stretch to £100 if I could source something. Hence the post...
What would they need to run a DVD-ROM; surely it'd run on a 300mhz PII or similar?

I haven't actually tried DVD playback (using software decoding) on anything less than a 833MHz box (IIRC). I guess the only way to tell is find someone with an older (hence slower) box and ask them to try DVD playback assuming they have a DVD drive and the playback software.

I've got a 600mhz notebook and DVD playback runs fine on that so I'd have though that it would be OK but like you say best to try it first.
Anyway DVD is a bonus, we could always source this at a later date. Anyone else got an old (but not too crusty ) PC they want rid of?
