Be prepared for a shock if you wanna change mb and cpu but keep your HD with XP on it without reinstalling. XP sees the hardware change and doesn't wanna boot. Found a way round it but be aware if you are planning to upgrade.

It's not to do with its registered hardware (licensing) and more to do with WIndows not finding a boot device where it was expecting one.
This is especially prevalent when changing chipsets on the motherboard - if you used to have a Pentium III on an intel chupset MoBo, then you buy a new MoBo with a Via chipset or AMD chipset & reboot, XP (or Win2K) can't find the hard disk disk controllers to boot from (it usually blue screens very early on in the boot process with a 'Cannot Find Boot Device' Stop screen).
In the days of 95 ,98 etc, it would just re-enumerate all the new mobo components, XP doesn't get as far as that these days as it all works on a much lower level with the hardware.
Thats progress you see..........
p.s Its also a bitch if you use a single ghost image over a lot of platforms
The only current way of fixing it is to start a re-install but use the repair option, this keeps all the user settings & programs but forces XP to re-enumerate its hardware and use the correct HAL.

DominicA - I dunno mate - doing a repair option forces XP to recheck all the hardware - so I'd be happy at doing that.....suppose it depended on how much stuff I'd got installed under XP and the hassle factor of doing a complete reload.
