Where can I get a fast Athlon Skt A 200FSB? Or should I try a Duron?
#1
I've got an 800Mhz Athlon, Socket A 200Mhz FSB, and I'd like to get a 1.4Ghz processor, but these are no longer generally available.
Anyone know where I might get one or have one for sale?
I don't really want to upgrade the rest of the PC at the moment, as I'd need a new motherboard & memory, and I have a embedded RAID controller and 512MB of memory, so the machine is quite fast already.
As an alternative, how would a 1.3Ghz Duron compare to my 800Mhz Athlon? Can't find anything on AMD's website to compare the two, which makes me think the Duron is a lot closer to the Athlon than they want you to think.......
Cheers

I believe a Duron is between 90 and 95% the performance of an Athlon. I think I read this on a site called processor emporium or cpu emporium or something.
I've built a few PCs using these chips, they are great for the money. For the price of a Duron it is worth giving it a try anyway.
Make sure you get the correct heatsink and fan - the one on your 800 might not be up to it.
You should check what cpu speeds are supported by the motherboard, if it doesn't automatically recognise the speeds then you will have to make settings manually or upgrade the bios.

It isn't quite as cut and dried that I am afraid
The performance difference of say a 1ghz Morgan (Newer, Faster) Core-based Duron against a 1Ghz Athlon is between a couple of percent when say gaming at 640x480 to over 20% in certain office/general productivity programs.
That's why they are so cheap.... Still they used to kill the Celerons, clock for clock
Cheers,
Nick

The athlon will always be better (especially in games) as it has more on chip cache, 256K versus the 64K of a Duron. You could probably run a 1.4 266fsb athlon to, depending on your motherboard. All u need to do is unlock the jumpers and set the correct FSB n multiplier. Anyway try these guys for a 1.4 200fsb athlon:

The cpu isnt advertised on the site, but they can get hold of them I believe.
Prepare to pay £110+ plus suitable fan for it though, as they are in short supply.

I checked my motherboard - it won't support 266FSB Athlon, although I'm sure it will work, there is no facility to change the clock multiplier. I'd end up with 200FSB but the processor would run at 1.05Ghz, so probably not worth it.
Sounds like the Duron isn't much use either - the main driver for more performance is digital photograph processing.
I thought (how naive) that I could pick up a 1.4Ghz/200FSB for 50 quid so it would be worth doing. If it's going to cost twice that, I'll just stick with what I've got for now - or buy some more memory.
I'll make a few calls and see what's what.
Thanks all!

Thanks!
Looks like I need to install a BIOS patch to run 1.4Ghz, and I've discovered that later revisions of my motherboard can accept XP's.
I think I've got the earlier version of the board though ;(, will check tonight.
If not I'll buy one off Ebay.
Cheers!

I thought that there was honour amongst Scoobynetters!
I guess I have about 3 days to figure out whether I can use an XP (involve's taking the cover off to check board revision, and I couldn't be fagged with crawling under the desk last night).
