Question

HI Guys,

I need some server based storage for a little project that I am doing. I would prefer to have a single box solution, ideally rackmount.

I need about 800gb - 1tb storage. Dosen't need to be very fast, but the normal PC archatecture that my usual server is running on is saturated.

Can anyone recommend anything? Needs to be able to run linux / openbsd, and have gigabit fiber.

BTW, usuall traffic is about 500 - 800 gb a day, on / off the server. Allways large transfers for a short period (gigabit)

a couple of grand. Mabey 2.5K?? including some HD's??

I looked at using a spare Ultra 10 I have lying about, but sun storage costs a bomb! I was about to buy a nice T3 array thay someone was selling `bare bones` in the states for 4000USD, but the price of the HD's are 1500UKP each (72gig 10Krpm fcal)!!!

Problem is that most linux implementations only support 160gig HD's.. even addressing 1TB needs a special kernel!!

Fault tolerance will be a consideration, mirror'd root HD's and the like. I really only need throughput though!

Brand new, for that kind of storage (1Tb), you are looking around 10K as a starting price for a directly attached system from Dell etc.

(I say 10K, but I'm guessing around that figure based on other stuff we have done recently).

Cheers

My old server is just a rackmount with 22 disk spaces in it.

It's topping out at 1.2TB, and the whole server cost me 1.5 grand. (not including the price of the 22 160G hd's!)

A server with the best part of 1TB of data is not going to be cheap, theres no chance of getting one from people like Dell for anything less than £10k to 15k i'd reckon. You could prob build one yourself for about £3.5k, I was looking at similar components the other day and you could probably get:

6x160Gb (960Gb Total) IDE HDD.........£1296
Intel SR2200 2U Chassis...............£776
Intel SCB2ATA Dual P3 Server M'board..£442
Backpane for M'Board..................£85
2x1.2Ghz P3...........................£246
1GB PC133 ECC RAM (2x512Mb)...........£180
Gigabit fibre NIC.....................£160
ATA Raid controller capable of 6HDDs..£230

coming in at just over £3400. Which I reckon is cheap for a Rackmount server with Dual Processors, 1Gb of RAM and 960Gb of disk space using reasonable components.
