i hope someone can help quickly - i was reading my e-mails when an internet explorer message came up - "you have succesfully configured your hard drive for formatting. Next time you start this computer you will need to re-install your operating system" this message appears every 10 mins or so now. I haven't tried to format the drive, whats happening? i don't know whether to turn the computer off or leave it on permanently????????
What can i do to stop the formatting?

Run a full virus scan on your PC before you do anything, the fact that you were reading e-mails when this first started happening makes me thing you may have a virus.

robby,

you could always, er, buy some antivirus software

For example, McAfee VirusScan V6 is only £12.29 from jungle.com

Peace of mind for the price of a few pints of beer!

Why can't you get into the file?

Open a DOS session & try (don't shutdown/restart)

"Edit c:\autoexec.bat"

if its read only...

"Attrib -r autoexec.bat"

or -s if system file or -h if hidden...

This link will install Antivirus software on your machine. It may or may not work, it comes with no support what so ever - unless I'm in a good mood and bored - and may well destroy your computer, car, house, cat, dog etc. But it's free - to the readers of this thread, not your mates - and works for a lot of people.

Antivirus Link

When it asks for your email address, add scoobynet at the start, like this scoobynetjclark@nai.com

One more thing you should know, I may be able to find out the names of any infected files you click on.
