Hes getting slowdowns with games. The main bottleneck with his system is the graphics card imo. RAM will definately help, but you need to also get yourself at least a Geforce 2 GTS/PRO or ideally a GF3/4 AGP 32/64mb vid card.

Angry

My poxy PC keeps slowing down when playing games or using more than one program. I'm no IT boffin but I think I need more RAM, at the moment it is 128. Its an HP Pavilion with a 900mhz AMD Athlon processor,128 RAM, and a Geforce2 MX graphics type thingy.

Would increasing the RAM help this slow down problem?? And how do I find what sort I need?? Finally, if I buy another 256Mb and bung it in will this run on top of the 128 already there, giving 388Mb of RAM?????

Just writing this is causing an annurism.

Cheers,

Karl

Basically yes - more RAM will help. 128MB isn't a lot with the bloatware around nowadays. If you can afford it, go for 512MB RAM.

Depends on what operating system you are running and some older motherboards though they can take 384Mb don't use more than 256 very well.

Have a look inside your case and find the motherboard type then try this site

http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp

You can match the memory to your board on there. Generally the more ram the better.

Before anybody asks...

No I don't work for Crucial, I have just found it is a good way for non-nerds to make sure the RAM will work in a mobo.

Thumbs up

Cheers for the advice. Is there any another way to find out the motherboard rather than getting busy with a screwdriver?? Like in the manual?? I've only really started noticing the slowdown on Warcraft III, the requirements are probably pushing my PC a bit now. Will upping RAM help with the speed of viewing and editing photo's and running those type of programms.

Cheers again,

Karl

Karlos RAM only for applications will help alot yes.

For games the more RAM u have the better, and a better GFX card.

With WC3 try tweaking the game video settings, like resolution detail etc, that might be enough to make it fine.
