My attempt at a general summary,
Sony - Look wicked, expensive, not the best performance, don't know about the support, lightweight.
Dell - Good value for money, not great looking, bulky & heavy, £2k will buy you the most performance compared to Sony and Tosh. Support is good.
Toshiba - Nokia/BMW 3 series of laptops... not the cheapest but excellent build quality & good product support. good performance.
Having borrowed a Sony, use a Toshiba laptop for work and used to own a Dell..... Tosh would be my pick. My Dell cost me about £2k and was seriously powerful machine (for a laptop) but you can't chuck them about like you can Toshibas (I found out the hard way...but also discovered Dell warranty support was v.good ). Didn't like the Sony at all.
all IMHO......... H

dont forget about ibm thinkpad as well. international warranty and support was amazing! got a dead LCD screen and was replace under the 3-years warranty while i was away in the far east. very robust and well made.
